The port of Tunis sits on a strip of land between the lake and the gulf. Its seafront is lined with fish restaurants, and behind them stand a 16th-century fort and the old Sicilian quarter.
- History
- The fort was built by Charles V of Spain in 1535 and taken by the Ottomans in 1574.
- Customs
- Summer evenings are busy: Tunisians come for dinner by the sea. Choose your fish at the counter and pay by weight.
- Food
- Grilled fish, "brik à l’œuf" and the local "complet poisson".
- Best time
- Summer evenings, or spring and autumn for quieter tables.
La Goulette was once nicknamed "Little Sicily", and Italians, Maltese, Jews and Muslims lived side by side here.
