Housed in a 15th-century Hafsid palace, the Bardo holds one of the largest collections of Roman mosaics anywhere, including the famous portrait of Virgil flanked by two Muses.
- History
- The museum opened in 1888 inside the former beylical palace, and its galleries still show the original painted ceilings.
- Customs
- Allow time for security checks at the entrance. Photography without flash is allowed.
- Food
- Head back toward the centre for a "fricassé", a small fried sandwich with tuna, egg and olives.
- Best time
- Any time. A good plan for a hot afternoon. Check opening days before you go.
The Virgil mosaic, found in Sousse, is one of the only known portraits of the poet made close to his lifetime.
