A covered lane of tiny shops next to the Zitouna Mosque, selling essential oils, incense, henna and painted wedding chests. It is one of the oldest souks of the medina.

History
Founded in the 13th century under the Hafsid dynasty.
Customs
Shopkeepers will offer a drop of jasmine or amber oil to try. Bargaining is expected, politely.
Food
Have a mint tea with pine nuts at a café on the edge of the souk.
Best time
Weekday mornings. Many shops close on Sunday.
Perfume sellers were placed closest to the Great Mosque on purpose: the noblest trades sat near the mosque, the noisiest and smelliest further away.
