Built by the French in the 1930s, the Mareth Line ran from the sea to the Matmata hills. Rommel’s forces held it in March 1943 until the British Eighth Army broke through. Bunkers remain, and a museum in Mareth tells the story.

History
The Battle of the Mareth Line lasted from 16 to 31 March 1943, before the Axis retreat to Wadi Akarit.

The line was finally outflanked through the Tebaga Gap, west of the hills, after a frontal attack had failed.
