Djerba's pottery village, where potters still work in vaulted underground workshops. The Guellala Heritage Museum tells the story of island life.

History
Pottery has been made here since antiquity, and the craft has passed down through Amazigh families.
Customs
Ask a potter to show you the wheel. Many workshops welcome visitors.
Food
Octopus is cooked in clay jars here, called "kanouns".
Best time
All year, mornings when the kilns are lit.
Guellala's potters traditionally work in half-buried workshops, which keep the clay cool and moist while it dries slowly.
