Inside the walls of the Sfax medina, this 17th-century palace is now a museum of costumes and everyday life of the past. It is one of the few places where the city’s own history, not the Roman or the Islamic capitals’, is told.

History
Sfax has been a trading and sea port for centuries, and its medina still keeps its ramparts.
Customs
Check the opening hours locally, and dress modestly in the medina.
Food
Eat in the medina or on the nearby Avenue Habib Bourguiba, where Sfax seafood is the speciality.
Best time
October to May.
Visiting it is also a way to see the inside of a traditional medina house, which hides its courtyard from the street.
