What to see in Kebili

4 places worth the drive in Kebili, with the time to allow and the best period for each. Every place has its own page: history, customs, food and directions.

  1. 1.Chott el Jerid

    A salt lake of mirages

The largest salt pan in the Sahara, crossed by a straight causeway. In the heat, mirages float over the white crust, and pools turn pink with algae.

Time : 1–2 hours · Best : Oct to Apr

  2. 2.Douz

    Where the Great Erg begins

The "gateway to the Sahara", where the sand sea of the Grand Erg Oriental begins. Camel treks and desert camps leave from here.

Time : 1–2 days · Best : Nov to Mar

  3. 3.Jebil National Park

The dunes of the Grand Erg, protected

About 80 km south of Douz, Tunisia’s second-largest national park covers 150,000 hectares of the Grand Erg Oriental: high dunes, rocky outcrops and dry riverbeds where gazelles still live.

Time : 2 days · Best : Nov to Mar

  4. 4.Camping Désert Club, Douz

A campsite in the palm grove, at the gate of the Sahara

One of the oldest campsites in the south, on the edge of the Douz palm grove, a few minutes from the town centre. Pitches for tents, vans and motorhomes under the palms, and the dunes of the Great Erg start just behind.

Time : 1–2 nights · Best : Oct to Mar
