Ksar Ghilane

A palm oasis at the edge of the Grand Erg Oriental, south of Douz. Visitors sleep in desert camps near the dunes, bathe in the hot springs and ride out on camels at sunset.

History

A Roman fort, Tisavar, stands a few kilometres from the oasis, a reminder of the old frontier.

Customs

Camps are usually booked with a night included; ask about the programme before you go.

Food

Camp meals often include chorba frik, mechoui and bread baked in the sand.

Best time

October to April. Summer days are very hot.

The oasis hot spring stays warm all year, a rare treat in the middle of the sand.
