Chenini, about half an hour from Tataouine, is a fortified granary village (ksar) built between two hilltop ridges, with its oldest parts dating from the 12th century. About 500 Berber farmers and herders live here, many in cave dwellings carved into the rock. Its mosque is linked to the legend of the Seven Sleepers, and scenes of the Star Wars films were shot in the area.

History
The village was built as a fortified granary, on two ridges for protection. Its population is falling as younger people move away.
Customs
Hire a local guide in the village and tip fairly. Dress modestly near the mosque.

A moon in the Star Wars universe, near Luke Skywalker’s home planet, is named Chenini.
