An archipelago an hour by ferry from Sfax, with shallow turquoise water, quiet beaches and villages that still live from the sea. No big hotels, no hurry.
- History
- Hannibal is said to have sailed from Kerkennah when he fled Carthage into exile in 195 BC.
- Customs
- Rent a bike: the islands are almost perfectly flat and traffic is light.
- Food
- Grilled octopus, dried in the sun on lines in front of the houses.
- Best time
- May to October. The ferry from Sfax gets busy on summer weekends.
Kerkennah fishermen use the "charfia", fixed traps of palm fronds planted in the shallows. The technique is on the UNESCO list of intangible heritage.
