Twenty kilometres north of Sousse, Hergla is a white village perched above the sea, with a small fishing port and a mosque that overlooks the bay. A calm alternative to the hotel strip.
- History
- The main mosque is named after Sidi Bou Mendel, a holy man who, according to tradition, settled here in the 13th century.
- Customs
- Esparto weaving, pottery and fishing are still the village crafts.
- Food
- Fresh fish at the port.
- Best time
- All year. June and September for swimming.
The name comes from Horrea Caelia, the grain warehouses that the Romans built here to ship the harvests of the region.
