Close to the Algerian border, Ammaedara spreads along a valley with almost no visitors: a triumphal arch, mausoleums, baths, several churches and one of the largest Byzantine fortresses in North Africa.
- History
- Founded as a military camp in the 1st century, the town became a colony of veterans, then a Christian and Byzantine centre.
- Customs
- The site is large and open: plan a few hours and bring water. Check the road situation locally, as the border zone is sometimes controlled.
- Food
- Eat in Kasserine or Thala on the way.
- Best time
- Spring and autumn.
The Third Augustan Legion had its first base here before moving west to Lambaesis, in today’s Algeria.
