Ancient Sufetula has a unique forum with three side-by-side temples to Jupiter, Juno and Minerva, entered through the Antonine gate.
- History
- A late Roman city that served as a Byzantine stronghold in the 7th century.
- Customs
- Quieter than El Jem: take your time and walk to the Byzantine churches.
- Food
- Try "mloukhia", a dark green stew of jute leaves, in a local restaurant.
- Best time
- Spring and autumn. Late afternoon light on the temples is beautiful.
In 647, Sufetula saw the first major battle between the Byzantines and the Arab armies, which opened North Africa to the Arab conquest.
