On a plateau about 900 m above sea level, in Siliana governorate, Makthar began as a Numidian stronghold in the 3rd century BC, became a Roman colony in AD 146, and later a Byzantine fortress. The Arch of Trajan dominates the south side of the forum, and the Great Baths, with walls rising to 15 m, are among the best preserved in North Africa. The Schola Juvenum, the amphitheatre and the Basilica of Rutilius stand nearby.
