Built around 238 AD for 35,000 spectators, Thysdrus's amphitheatre is one of the best-preserved in the world. You can climb the tiers and walk the tunnels where animals waited.
- History

- Customs
- Your ticket also covers the archaeological museum and its villa mosaics a short walk away.
- Food
- Have a "chakchouka", eggs poached in pepper and tomato sauce, in a café facing the arena.
- Best time
- Early morning or late afternoon. The International Symphony Festival runs in July and August.
El Jem is the third-largest Roman amphitheatre ever built. Its arena appeared in the film "Gladiator", and it now hosts a summer symphony festival.
